Country Etiquette Three Paragraphs + A Thesis Statement
Compare and contrast your assigned country to at least five countries (one from each continent/region).

Look for similarities and differences in etiquette practices and cultural practices. Write at least three paragraphs (compare, contrast, and personal experience) detailing the regional similarities and differences between the continents based on their greetings, eating customs, and family life.

Thesis:
·       A statement declaring a big picture idea about regional similarities and differences between etiquette practices (think cultural imperialism)

Compare (paragraph one):
·       Describe the practices of the first country.
·       Cite a detail from the presentations about similarities between your country and the five you chose.
·       Touch on similarities about:
o   Greetings
o   Eating customs
o   Family life

Contrast (paragraph two):
·       Reference the practices of your original country again. This can be as simple as, “As previously stated…”
·       Cite details from the presentation about differences between your country and the five that you chose.
·       Touch on differences about:
o   Greetings
o   Eating customs
o   Family life

Your family (paragraph three):
·       Describe (both comparing and contrasting) how the etiquette traditions that you researched for your country are similar to and/or different from those of your family.

Conclusion:
An overarching/general statement about cultural differences or similarities between continental regions.

Example Paragraphs from period 4:

Even though the US and India are on opposite sides of the world, there are a surprising number of similarities between the two countries. Their more notable commonality is that both countries use handshakes when greeting each other. It is common for people in both countries to bring gifts when visiting someone’s house for a dinner party. Further, it is polite to greet elders first in both countries. Finally, by comparing India to the US, people can learn that the US and India have many cultural similarities.

Contrast:

A significant distinction between India and the United States is that, in India, guests turn down the first offer of food and in the US guests accept food when offered the first time. Unlike in the US, there are large numbers of people with dietary restrictions because of religion. Muslims do not eat port and Hindus do not eat beef. Further, it is customary to eat with your right hand in India, while people eat using utensils in the United States. The differences between the US and India are important because it allows people to understand the distinct cultural identities.
